Historic Streetscape Restoration - Galena, IL

...a step back into history
Outcomes:

Once the commercial center for a community of 14,000 residents, the Galena of the 1850’s has been remarkably preserved and today caters to one million annual visitors who marvel at its historic architecture, quaint streets and unique shops and restaurants. SAA in partnership with the Raymond Professional Group’s engineers prepared a master plan for the reconstruction, preservation and restoration of the historic town center streets, utility infrastructure, sidewalks, public spaces and riverfront trail system. Following a detailed project phasing plan and four years of construction, visitors are greeted by historically accurate materials, landscapes, and period site furnishings that respect the town’s historic past and architecture. A new street for community events and festivals has been added along with improved parking, bike and pedestrian path connections, wayfinding system and period lighting. With reconstruction came not only preservation of historic elements but improved capacity and functionality in the historic town center.
