The ‘river is ours again’ said one visitor. For generations Rock Island’s downtown and city residents have been separated from the Mississippi River by businesses and a flood control dike. With the opening of Schwiebert Park residents can now take in sweeping views of the river, observe barges move through locks, see American bald eagles feeding in the winter or attend a concert on the bank of the river. When the Mississippi River threatens to flood, a removable flood wall system provides protection.
