The Grand Itasca takes a holistic view of health and wellness in serving its community. In response the clinic and hospital site plan emphasize sustainable site development practices, and are integrated into the natural environment of the headwaters of the Mississippi River and into the community and regional recreation systems that adjoin the site. Future expansion space for the hospital, clinics and a retirement community are incorporated into the site plan. The main buildings are placed to view the river and adjoining shore land as well as capture the seasonal changes on the site. Trails for year round recreational biking, walking and cross country skiing are incorporated into the site, connect to the adjoining state park and are accessible for public use. An extensive landscaped arrival court and several interior courtyard healing gardens create quiet spaces for staff and patients.
