In 2008, SAA teamed with the Bicycle Federation of Wisconsin to develop a 20-year bicycle and pedestrian plan that would detail sound strategies for improving non-motorized transportation in the Wausau area.
The plan was developed to help all communities within the metropolitan planning organization (MPO) to initiate programs and install facilities that would increase safety and access to regional destinations such as Rib Mountain State Park and the Mountain-Bay Trail.
Recommendations included bicycle and pedestrian programs, facility improvements, route assignment, and implementation strategies. A timetable for implementation of the non-motorized network was also developed. The plan was adopted in January 2009.
