Urban Bike Lane Design Webinar

On November 16, 2011, SAA’s bike team including Blake Theisen, Bruce Morrow, Patrick Hannon, John Lichtenheld and David Schreiber participated in a webinar offered by the Association of Pedestrian and Bicycle Professionals  detailing alternatives for the creation of safe bike lanes when such lanes need to adjoin parked cars.  This condition is a common concern for many communities attempting to retrofit urban traffic corridors to accommodate bicycle use within established curb lines. Bill Schultheiss, P.E., a senior engineer with the Toole Design Group and instructor for the webinar  discussed design solutions and design research that illustrate alternatives for  proper lane placement and distance from parked cars to improve rider safety.  The SAA bike team has applied such techniques when implementing the Roadway Bike Striping Plan for Sheboygan County and the Appleton On-Road bike plan in 2010. Similarly our current work in downtown Waunakee and Racine will be able to take advantage of new ideas learned.
